What Does a Standard Score Mean?

A standard score turns raw performance into a common scale so that a result can be interpreted relative to a reference distribution.

Two people encounter the same unfamiliar material several times. One reaches accurate recall after relatively little exposure; the other needs more repetitions. Days later, however, their retention may look different again.

An IQ percentile describes relative standing in a norm group. It is not the percentage of questions answered correctly and not the percentage of intelligence a person possesses.

You answer a difficult question and feel only 55 percent confident. Instead of submitting immediately, you check your reasoning. On another question, you know that you do not know the answer and decide to look it up.

“Average” is not a kind of person. It is a position within a reference distribution created by comparing performance with an appropriate norm group.

You need to arrive at an airport by 06:00. That goal alone is not a plan. You must work backward from departure time, estimate travel and security time, decide when to leave, arrange transport, identify dependencies and perhaps prepare alternatives if something goes wrong.

People can change substantially while their relative standing compared with others becomes increasingly stable. Those are not contradictory facts.

A strategy works repeatedly, and then the problem changes. The old strategy is still available—perhaps even automatic—but continuing to use it now produces the wrong result. Successful performance requires recognizing that the situation has changed and reorganizing what you are doing.

Intelligence can help a person reason well. Wisdom asks a different question: how well is judgment used when values, uncertainty, other people and the consequences of action matter?

Research Trail is an experimental How Intelligence Works tool for tracing questions, hypotheses, sources, AI interventions, analyses, findings and claims through a live investigation.
